STEPS OF SUCCESS
“Because turning your back - even for one second - can be enough time for a curious toddler to reach water, ISR teaches children to save their own lives.”
-JoAnn Barnett
Why teach a baby to swim?
"The circumstances surrounding death by drowning provides a jarring social commentary. The highest drowning fatality rate is for children under the age of one year." Edward Rubenstein M.D. Scientific American Medicine, Vol. 8, III, 1985.
Drowning for children under the age of four years is an epidemic in the United States. In Florida, Arizona, California, and Texas, drowning is the No.1 cause of accidental death for that age group; and nationally, it ranks second only to automobile accidents as the most prominent cause of accidental death. Eighty-six percent of these tiny victims drown while fully clothed; and usually... the parent "turned her back for just a second".. and the infant was gone. All swimming behaviors must be taught. If swimming was "natural" for a baby, why do so many drown each year? Consider this too, where you live is one concern, where you vacation is another. In Florida and California drowning is the most prominent cause of
While we do teach survival skills, no program can claim a guarantee of "drownproofing.”
Always remember there is no substitute for adult supervision.
